Lavreotica is a region in Attica of historical, archaeological, paleontological, mining-metallurgical and geological importance. The word "lavra" means narrow passage or tunnel describing the characteristics of mining galleries. The first underground excavations began around 3000 BC., establishing Laurion mines as the oldest in Europe. Lavreotica was one of the largest ancient mining complexes in the ancient world.
