Description
In July 1964, workers of the Athens Water Board, who were digging to lay pipes in Ampelokipoi, found a host of bronze statuettes of assorted sizes and types, at a depth of 2 m. The pieces probably belonged to a private individual who hid them there under the threat of an imminent danger, which was perhaps related to the incursion by the Heruls in the 3rd century AD or the Goths led by Alarich in the late 4th century BC. The statuettes from Ampelokipoi appear to have been made in important Attic workshops that were flourishing during Roman imperial times. Most of the pieces, are copies in miniature or re-workings of well known works of the Classical and Hellenistic. National Archaeological Museum Athens.
